Day trips from Lublin: Zamość

Zamość is a city with a bit more than 65.000 inhabitants around 90 kilometers south east of Lublin. It is a very worth seeing city because of its good atmosphere and because the city center is built according to the Italian Renaissance idea of being an ideal city, also the main architect of the city was of Italian origin (Bernardo Morando). Because of its designed ideal Renaissance town, the city center of Zamość has been placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1992.

How to get there: When you’ve access to a car, Zamość is around 1 hour and 10 minutes driving from Lublin. However, also with public transport it should not be a big problem to reach Zamość. From the bus station in Lublin, there are lots of busses departing to Zamość (almost every hour different busses). The bus travel will last – depending on the number of stops – around 1 hour and 30 minutes and should cost around 15 zloty, but in some cases discounts for students may apply. When you arrive at the bus station in Zamość it is around half- hour walk to the old town, so you may want to use the city busses to get there. Another option to reach Zamość from Lublin is with the regional train departing from Lublin main train station or from Lublin north station (all trains to Zamość stop at both stations), however you should remember that the train takes about 2 hours and 10 minutes, so much longer than the bus and it stops at many different places. Another disadvantage of the train compared with the bus is that the train is driving much less frequent with only 4 trains each day, which means there is one train about every 3-4 hours. The price of a train ticket is 15 PLN so quite similar to the price of the bus, however for students 51% discount applies, which means that you have to pay only 7,35 zloty. From the train station it is around 15 minutes walking to the old town of Zamość.

Sightseeing: When you are in the old town of Zamość, almost everything is worth to see, however there are of course some main places, I will sum up some of them.

  • Great Market Square (Rynek Wielki): this is the main square in Zamość. It has the form of a mathematical square and is surrounded by the most impressive tenements in Zamość, this is where the richest merchants in the city were living. Especially worth to mention are the ”Armenian houses” located at this market square, these are 5 houses in a row, which are all very colorful and rich decorated. The reason that they are named the Armenian houses is that the red house in this row was built by a rich merchant from Armenia in the early 30s of the 17th Nowadays there has been the museum of the history of Zamość.
  • Town Hall (Ratusz): this big easy to notice building is also located at the Great Market Square. It is worth to climb this stairs because from their highest point you have a nice view on the Market Square.
  • Zamość Cathedral (Katedra Zamojska): built at the end of the 16th The interior is worth seeing because of a beautiful baroque altar.
  • Zamość Synagogue (Synagoga w Zamościu): before the Second World War, Zamość had a big and important Jewish community, about 43% of the total population was Jewish. The most of Jews were killed during the Second World War, however there is some remaining of the Jewish culture still visible. The most important is the synagogue, which was built in the second decade of the 17th It’s one of the Renaissance synagogues in Poland of which the building is in the best condition and today a museum mainly related to the Jewish history of the city and Poland is located here.
  • Zamoyski Palace (Pałac Zamoyskich): this palace built between 1579 and 1586 was the residence of Jan Zamoyski – who was the founder of the town – and his descendants. Originally the palace was not a big as it is now and especially in the 19th century, when the building started to be used as a military hospital. Nowadays it has become the city court of Zamość.
  • The Zoo: is located directly in front of the train station. This is a great place to stand face to face with a tiger, a lion or a bear. You can go around the zoo, go for a coffee or buy a souvenir. It is one of the greatest zoos in Poland.

Except these main places there is a lot more to see in Zamość and also with finding a place to eat or for example souvenir shops you shouldn’t have any problems, the city is literally filled with them. However we advice you, that you will just discover this by yourself!
