My guide: Rzeszów

Rzeszów is the capital of Subcarpathian Voivodeship, an oasis of science and culture. This city is loved by travelers, thanks to developed tourist infrastructure, interesting architectural monuments and history that carry us in different epochs of the past. In 1354 the settlement of Rzeszów received city rights and privileges. In the 16th century the defender of the city became the Knight of Rzeszow (Rzeszowski), from whom the modern name of the city started.

The Lyubomirsky castle is one of the most prominent architectural monuments of the city. It was built in the late 16th – early 17th centuries. The founder of the Castle was the governor Mikołaj Spytek Ligęza. The castle is located near the city center. In 1820, the Austrian authorities rebuilt the complex and adapted it for judicial and prison purposes. Today, after numerous constructions, only the gates of the tower and the towers of the bastions are preserved in its original form.

The historic part of the city is centered on the medieval Market Square. The Town Hall, which was rebuilt in the 19th century and an ancient well are the parts of the Square. The Town Hall was built in 1591 and is the tallest building on the Square. In the basements of the Town Hall fragments of old walls and vaults are discovered. There are many cafes, pubs and souvenir shops on the Market Square.

Underground stretches under the Market Square and nearby stone houses. In the times of the prosperity of the trade, merchants hid goods from all over the world there. During wars it served as a shelter for the local population. In the 20th century there were underground shops, where people, especially Jews, sold colonial goods. Today, this mysterious maze is part of the museum, and you can visit it with a guide. The underground tourist route is about 340 meters long and consists of 50 basements, and the lowest part is at the depth of 10 meters.

There is a monument to Tadeusz Nalepa in Rzeszów.  Tadeusz Nalepa is the father of the Polish blues. The blues performer is pictured with a guitar in his hand. Perhaps, his fans remembered their favourite guitarist,  singer and composer in such way.
