Women’s Day and Men’s Day in Poland

With the first rays of the sun, you can smell spring in the air. Flower shops are full of delicate spring flowers such as tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, snowdrops and mimosas. It is at this time, in the beginning of spring – the 8th March, practically all over the world, that International Women’s Day is celebrated.

The 8th March is not an official holiday in Poland, but on that day Lublin is immersed in the atmosphere of an unofficial holiday. Men present flowers, cards, sweets and small delicate gifts to women.  You may hear music greetings over the radio. Various competitions are held and prizes are presented to women on that day. Usually, various shopping malls and well-known brands hold promotions, announce discounts on certain goods, present gift certificates and bonus cards that day.

However, not only women have their holiday. Recently, another unofficial holiday has appeared on the Polish calendar. It is Men’s Day, which is celebrated on the 10th March. The tradition to celebrate Men’s Day started in Trinidad and Tobago in 1999. The essence of the holiday lies in the idea of gender equality. The idea of the holiday was first supported in Australia, the Caribbean, North America, Europe, Asia, and then the UN and UNESCO supported the idea of the Men’s Day. Today, Men’s Day is recognized as an official holiday in more than 60 countries. Although World Men’s Day is officially celebrated on the 19th November, in Poland the 10th March has been adopted for Men’s Day celebration. This holiday is not as popular as “women’s” yet, but it is a good opportunity to congratulate and give a symbolic souvenir to a loved one or a friend.
