If you are curious about how the pharmacy in the Lublin region looked over a century ago, visit the Pharmacy Museum at ul. Grodzka 5a, from Monday to Friday between 9am and 4pm.


There is one thing that cannot be missing from Polish table on Christmas Eve. It is Christmas wafer. According to the Polish tradition, Christmas Eve starts with the breaking of the Christmas wafer which is made of wheat flour and water. It is a symbol of reconciliation and forgiveness.

When? 17-19 August 2018
Where? Lublin, Old Town and Castle Square

Festival presents traditional Slavic culture (i.e. folk item, music, singing, dancing,  art and crafts practices).
Art and crafts practices are presented  by artisans  from Eastern European countries. The event takes place at the Old Town, where the spirits of the Middle Ages still live.
The best folk bands play great folk music giving unforgettable atmosphere of common fun. More information: here

– some university libraries – if you are not a student, you can use books only in the library. You cannot take the books away in most of these libraries. Every university library has it’s own rules.

51Festivals in Lublin

Multicultural Lublin – the festivity of Lublin cultures which is connection of meetings, movies, music and workshops. Usually at the end of May.

Sportival – the sport festival organized in May.

The Night of Culture – organized in June, this year the night of 4/5th of June 2016 where the city turns out to be the place of culture with many cultural events, concerts, shows.

Museum Night takes place in many Polish city and in Lublin as well. During that night you have a great opportunity to visit Lublin museums for free.

Carnaval Sztukmistrzow – is one of the eye-catching events of Lublin. The first Carnaval was organized in 2008 under the name “Festival Sztukmistrzów”. It is simply the time for fun with various street shows, circus-theatre, spectacles and workshops which were opened for everyone.

– Jarmark Jagielloński w Lublinie is one of the most famous festivals in Lublin. It is unique connection between folk culture and music with a local craft fair. All information about this fair you may find here.

Ukraina w centrum Lublina – is the annual event, which takes place in Lublin. It is the mix of modern Ukrainian culture: concerts, exhibitions, movies and the like.

Did you know that Lublin is the city of  film? Thanks to the unique and charming Old Town, because of which a lot of Polish and foreign movie and TV series director’s decided to make movies right here.  Have you watched some productions like ”The Reader” nominated to Oscar’s prize? This movie was filmed on the area of Majdanek. “Aryan Couple” movie – where its role played building of Crown Tribunal and Lublin Castle. Brand New productions are: “Volta” and TV series “Morowe Panny”. Other productions: “Wołyń”- scenes were taking in The Open Air Village Museum in Lublin, „Carte Blanche”, “Panie Dulskie”, “Ogniem i Mieczem”, “Kronika wypadków miłosnych”, “Kamienie na szaniec” and many others.

Did you know that Since 2009 European Festival of Taste takes place every September in Lublin? It’s a very unique meeting with music, art, interesting workshops and of course with amazing taste. During the Festival, you can taste unique cheese, liqueurs, meats, fish and dishes, you can also do some shopping and by e.g. natural spices.

The Reader

Elements of the famous film The Reader was recorded in Lublin at the former Nazi concentration camp at Majdanek.

Lublin is a place of cinematography because of its architecture and character, and of course, because of its history.

Did you know that the eldest Polish Television programme is “1 out of 10”? It has been shown since 1994 and you can watch it every day – from Monday till Friday at around 6.45 p.m. It is recorded in Lublin.

 


93Cemeteries in Lublin

In Lublin  are located historical cemeteries that are also important for local society and its history. Here we present part 1 of the guide – worth visiting to better learn the history of the region:

Roman – Catholic Cemetery at Lipowa Street – founded in the end of 18th century. Many historical and artistically outstanding monuments of Lublin citizens can be found here. What is also important, an educational path was created some time ago which helps to understand the symbolism of the tombstones.

Military Cemetery at Lipowa Street (Biała Street) – is a part of the huge cemetery at Lipowa but the main entrance is located at Biała Street. Characteristic element of area is the stone helmet which was built as a  collective tombstone of soldiers.

Evangelic Cemetery in Lublin – located next to Catholic cemetery at Lipowa Street. Beautiful historic monuments have been renovated in recent years.

Orthodox Cemetery at Lipowa Street – is also a great example of tombstone art and our city history.

State Museum at Majdanek

Do you know that…

The State Museum at Majdanek was the first martyrdom museum commemorating victims of the World War II in Europe. It was set up in November 1944  on the place of the former Nazi concentration camp.


100Museum of Martyrdom “Under the Clock”

Did you know that…

The name of the Museum of Martyrdom “Under the Clock” is derived from the clock located above the main entrance of the building of the former Land Office   on the Uniwersytecka Street 1 in Lublin, where during the years 1939-1944 the headquarters of the Gestapo and police investigators were based. Political prisoners were interrogated and tortured there. The museum was created from the initiative of those who managed to survive.

History Museum of the City of Lublin in the Kraków  Gate

 

This place collects items dedicated to the history of Lublin and its inhabitants. Here you can see archaeological objects showing several centuries of the history of the city. In the museum’s collection you will see inter alia the famous Lublin executioner’s sword. Sightseeing is possible from Tuesday to Sunday.

Did you know that…
Lublin Village Museum is one of the largest open air museums in Poland. It has the form of a small village. The collected items are related to the former rural life, manors and towns. Different workshops, reconstructions of historical dances and other cultural events are held there. You will find useful information concerning sightseeing here.

Grodzka Gate NN Theatre

There you will find thousands of pictures of the prewar Polish-Jewish Lublin. You can listen to the storiesof the city’s  residents how the city used to look like. You will also see a model of the pre-war Lublin and exhibition on the extermination of the Jews of Lublin.

Vincent Pol Manor

It is a biographical museum of the poet and geographer Vincent Pol, located in a classical mansion built in the late 18th  century in a small farm near Lublin called Firlejowszczyzna. You will see a collection of postcards or the Earth globes from the 19th and 20th century there. For more practical information click here.


105Józef Czechowicz Literary Museum

Located on  Złota St. 3 , the literary museum was established on the initiative of the  local literature circles (), the aim of which was to commemorate Józef Czechowicz, one of the most original and individual avant-garde poets, who came from Lublin. You will see there photographs depicting Lublin of the 30s of the 20th century taken by Czechowicz. You will find more details related to sightseeing here.

UMCS Museum

The museum gathers collections related to the history of the university. It also has a rich collection of contemporary art works, mostly sketches or graphics. The museum is based in the building of the Main UMCS Library on the Radziszewskiego St. 11.  You will find more information about opening hours here.

 


107University Museum of History of KUL

In the museum set on the .Racławickie 14 Avenue you can find exhibits related to the history of the University and collections commemorating Pope John Paul II who was once a professor at KUL. An interesting fact is that the halls of today’s museum used to be a Dominican refectory. You can visit the museum from Monday to Friday from 9a.m. to 3:30p.m.

Pharmacy Museum

An inconspicuous pharmaceutical museum on the Grodzka St. 5  will delight you with a decor which is already unprecedented in modern pharmacies. A rich collection of weights, old bulky furniture, pharmaceutical glass, old recipes and medicine labels are definitely worth seeing. The museum is opened everyday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Did you know that…

the exhibition of Lublin brewing it is open to the public, and it is situated on the basements of the Perła Brewery. If you want to see how beer is brewed and out of which ingredients, you cannot miss it! Sightseeing is possible on Saturdays from 12a.m. to 4p.m.

 


111Cathedral Museum

While visiting the museum, you must see:

Treasury –a room with a double vault where objects of worship have been collected for centuries.

Crypts – located in the basement of the Cathedral. From the very beginning they were intended for burials of monks and people connected to the Church.

Acoustic Sacristy – a place with extraordinary acoustic properties. Here you can communicate in a whisper while standing diagonally in the corners of the sacristy. Experience it yourself! You can also visit the Museum online

Basilica of the Dominican Friars

Trinitarian Tower

Did  you know that…

The Archdiocesan Museum of Religious Art is based inside the tower. On the way to the observation deck you will see household items, religious paintings, icons, sculptures, textiles, sarcophagi, musical instruments, candlesticks, coffin portraits and other historical objects. You can visit the museum from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is possible to enter for free on the first Sunday of each month.

With almost a hundred years of history, the Choir at KUL gives a chance to musically talented people to spread their wings.

It is an academic team bringing together lovers of dance and folk music, students and graduates of the University of Life Sciences in Lublin and other universities. Participants of “Jawor” took part in more than 100 foreign trips and  visited all the continents in the course of their activities!

Thanks to the patronage over bands as well as artistic and cultural projects, ACK inspires students in art. It is often identified with “Chatka Żaka” and Maria Curie-Skłodowska University.

Lublin heynal

One of the highlights of the city is “Lublin heynal”.  It is unique music, that sounds daily from the balcony of the New Town Hall.

This tune has more than 400 years. Its author is unknown, but the names of the trumpeters who performed it obviously became legends and history. Daily at 12:00 o’clock you may hear the heynal. Those ancient sounds tell to the city that life goes on.
