The bus stop called “the Freedom Square” provides to the city centre in Lublin. Then you can go on Krakowskie Przedmieście, the Old Town or nearby café and restaurants. However, before you go further we invite you for another virtual rest in the little square on the Freedom Square.
The Freedom Square is surrounded by a few extremely crucial buildings in Lublin. On the one side, we can see magnificent tenement houses. On the other side, the Voivodeship Library of Hieronim Łopaciński is situated there. It is worth to visit this library because it is really convenient for its readers. You can find very good books over there. Looking further, we can see the Bernardine’s Church. The Freedom Square was used to called as a Bernardine Square because of the monastery and the church there. Near the church, there is the building of the 1sth female gymnasium in Lublin- it was used to be a gymnasium in 1921. Nowadays, there is a high school.
The central point on the square is a fountain rounded by a few sitting place. In the sunny days, the shines reflect off the beautiful fountain in the Freedom Square. Sitting among the Lublin pigeons you can have a rest and linger over coffee or lunch. Interestingly enough, this place has interesting history. The majestic water tower was built many years ago. The water tower seemed to be the fortified tower made of bricks. The water tower played a role of waterworks that was pumped water to the nearby houses. At first, the water tower was belonged to the private person. Later on, the water tower was taken over by the public waterworks of Lublin. The water tower was extremely important for the citizens of Lublin. However, after some time the tower has lost its importance. Unfortunately, the tower was seriously destroyed during the Second World War. Finally, the tower has been ruined after the Second World War. The Freedom Square got the new architectural appearance of streets and buildings.
Seemingly we can say that this important and beautiful element of Lublin’s architecture has been forgotten. No sooner than 50 years later have people recalled about the tower. As a result, the representatives of the public waterworks of Lublin initiated building “the mini water tower”. They situated it in the similar place where the previous, original tower used to stand. The replica of that tower stands now as a fountain which connects marvelous little building and water in itself. The original place of the water tower has been signed on the sidewalk as a dark polygon near the fountain. Sitting in front of the fountain we can compare its contemporary look with the imaginative original version of the water tower. We should imagine how important the tower was for the previous people of Lublin.
Maybe is it worth to look at the fountain and listen to the water falling down imagining the original building? Maybe then we will find out old Lublin on this square – the Freedom Square.
The next walk will be continued….
