Family benefit

Family benefit aims to partially cover the child’s maintenance. You can apply for it if you are staying in Poland with your family based on:
• permanent residence permits,
• long-term resident’s EU residence permit,
• temporary residence permit in connection with work in a profession that requires high qualifications,
• temporary residence permit – because another EU country has granted you a long-term resident’s EU residence permit – and you intend to: work, run a business, take or continue studies or vocational training in Poland,
• residence cards with the annotation “access to the labor market”. This point does not apply to a person who is a citizen of a non-EU country but has a work permit in an EU country for up to 6 months or is admitted to study or has the right to work on the basis of a visa,
• refugee status or subsidiary protection.

The amount of the monthly allowance for each child in the family depends on his age, i.e.
1) 95.00 PLN for a child up to the age of 5;
2) 124.00 PLN for a child over 5 years of age up to 18 years of age;
3) 135.00 PLN for a child over the age of 18 up to the age of 24.

Entitled to receive the allowance are:
– parents, one of the parents or legal guardian of the child;
– the child’s actual guardian (the person actually looking after the child, if he / she applied to the family court for adopting the child);
– a learner (an adult learner who is not dependent on his parents in connection with their death or in connection with the determination of a court judgment or court settlement of the right to maintenance on their part).

Parents, one parent, the child’s legal guardian or the child’s actual guardian are entitled to an allowance if:

– the child is under 18 years of age or
– the child is in school, but no longer than until the age of 21, or
– 24 years old, if the child continues his education in school or college and has a moderate or severe disability certificate

The last named person is entitled to the benefit on condition that he / she continues education in school or college, however, not longer than until reaching the age of 24.
The granting of this benefit depends on the income criterion. In the benefit period 2019/2020, per family income, family income may not exceed 674 PLN. If your family exceeds this threshold, then according to the “złoty for złoty” principle, family allowance and supplements are entitled to the difference between the total amount of family allowances and supplements, and the amount by which the family income was exceeded. If the amount of family allowances and allowances due to a given family, determined in accordance with the above mechanism, is lower than 20.00 PLN, these benefits shall not be payable.

The benefit is granted for the entire benefit period, which lasts from November 1 to October 31 of the following year. If you submit your claim by September 30, it will be paid from November. If you submit between October 1 and November 30, you will receive benefits until December 31.

People who are entitled to family allowance are entitled to receive various supplements depending on their needs:

• allowance for education and rehabilitation of a disabled child,
• allowance for taking a child at school outside the place of residence,
• allowance for starting the school year,
• allowance for raising a child alone,
• allowance for raising a child in a large family.

The granting of a specific benefit supplement is subject to separate criteria. These allowances also have different amounts of benefit.
